Developing Your Body AND Your Mind Leads to a Well-Rounded Life

By: Michael McIntyre, ACSM Certified Personal Trainer @ Rochester NY‘s Knockout Fitness Center

The Greek philosopher Plato (428-348 BCE) recognized two categories of instruction and education: Gymnastics, which can be widely interpreted as any instruction that develops the body and one’s physical capacities, and music, understood as studies that develop the mind and spirit of an individual. He observed that development in gymnastics to the exclusion of music created individuals that had a brutish and callous nature. Conversely, those that cultivated music and endeavors of the mind but lacked gymnastic practice tended to be weak and frail individuals.

For those who spend all of their time developing their bodies through exercise and sports, consider laying aside some time to develop your intellectual faculties and experiencing literature and the arts, lest you become the brutes that Plato described. For those that spend little to no time developing their physical capacities, strive for balance by allotting time to developing your bodies.

According to Plato, those that represented proper development in the areas of both gymnastics and music would represent the exemplars of society. Their bodies steeled against the hardships of life, and their minds cultivated in order to understand the higher things, they would be prepared to govern their affairs wisely and with great clarity of mind. So strive to spend time in both intellectual and physical pursuits in order to achieve a well-rounded life.
